Optometric Associates is excited to welcome Dr. Salmon Porbandarwalla, who will be providing retinal injection services to the New Holland community. Dr. Porbandarwalla will be available on a part-time basis to manage conditions such as wet macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, retinal swelling, and other retinal conditions that require ongoing intravitreal injections.

Salman Porbandarwalla, MD, MS

Vitreoretinal Diseases & Retina Specialist. Dr. Porbandarwalla earned his bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry with high honors and a minor in Finance at the University of Texas in Austin. He then pursued his passion for physical optics and completed his Master’s degree in Biophysics at The Georgetown University in Washington D.C. He moved back to his home town in Texas where he graduated medical school with honors at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. 

During medical school, he was the recipient of the prestigious Bowen Vogyt Award. Upon graduation, he secured a medical internship at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center in PA and was awarded the intern of the year award. During his internship he was mentored by Dr. Ralph Eagle at Wills Eye Hospital in Ocular Melanoma pathology. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Health Science center in San Antonio and was again named the chief resident of his residency class. Dr. Porbandarwalla then went on to complete a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle.

He is well published in both peer reviewed journal articles as well as authored book chapters. He has been an active investigator in clinical trials. Dr. Porbandarwalla is board certified and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, PA Medical Society, and PA Academy of Ophthalmology.

His numerous clinical interests involve diseases and disorders of the retina and vitreous, such as age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disease and occlusions, uveitis, hypertensive retinopathy and optic neuropathy. His surgical interests involve small gauge repair of retinal detachments, sutureless surgical repair of macular puckers and macular holes. He specializes in complex repair of traction retinal detachments due to diabetic retinopathy as well as from proliferative vitreoretinopathy. He also has extensive training in surgical repair secondary to trauma.

Dr. Porbandarwalla has been residing in Lancaster, PA since 2014. In addition to spending time with his family, in his spare time he likes being outdoors, traveling, watching football and playing golf. He is excited to be back in Lancaster county.
